The inspiration for the R & M Reyes Family Foundation charitable organization comes from the courage, perseverance, and fortitude displayed by José Ramón Reyes Quiñónez and Mildred Reyes Hernández. Like so many other Mexicanos, they left behind their beloved homeland and families, averting poverty, to come to the United States in search of a better life.
Blessed with a strong work ethic, faith, and the dream of a brighter future, Ramón and Mildred Reyes overcame poverty, racism, discrimination, and a significant language barrier upon their arrival from Durango and Jalisco respectively. In the Sacramento region, they created and sustained an enduring support system holding true to their Mexican cultural heritage, Spanish language and Mestizo ancestry. Along with many others, they found support in groups such as the Teamsters union, the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), the Guadalupe Society (at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church), and the Comité Patriótico Mexicano de Vacaville. By sustaining ties with other immigrant families in the region, they created community, fostered a common purpose, and nurtured their spirit.
With this foundation, Ramón and Mildred motivated their children to serve their communities, appreciate their cultural heritage, embrace their background, and to pay it forward. From this inspiration and lifelong lessons, we are moved to give back to our communities, respect the dignity of others, and engage enthusiastically in public service work.
A lifelong commitment to these values while honoring our ancestors; keeping Mexican cultural traditions alive; selflessly acknowledging the achievements of others; and paying it forward, are the essence of the R & M Reyes Family Foundation.
The purpose of the R & M Reyes Family Foundation/Los Amigos Golf Tournament is to engage in philanthropic activities--primarily scholarships--to enhance the well-being of our communities with a focus on increasing and supporting educational opportunities for unserved and under-resourced youth including but not limited to Mexican, Latinx, and Indigenous students
